Seagate announced the project two years ago, but only now is the time seems ripe to consider. The Momentus XT is to speed up system performance by up to 150 percent. A pure-Seagate SSD is found to be slightly faster, costs of comparable capacity, but a fortune.

Seagate has long been seen as skeptical about the future of SSDs. CEO Bill Watkins said in 2008: "SSD is great potential for the miniaturization of storage, production at attractive prices that is not yet economically feasible." The market was therefore done in 2009.
